Along the western banks of the Mississippi river in St. Louis is the gleaming Gateway Arch. Standing at a towering 630 feet, the Arch is both the tallest monument in the United States and the tallest arch in the world. The Gateway Arch commemorates the Louisiana Purchase and 19th century westward expansion, and is commonly referred to as "The Gateway to the West".
