Named in honor of the Native Americans who first inhabited the region over 10,000 years ago, Congaree National Park in South Carolina preserves the largest area of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the US. Waters from the Congaree and Wateree Rivers sweep through the floodplain, carrying nutrients and sediments that nourish and rejuvenate this ecosystem and support the growth of national and state champion trees.
