Located along the Atlantic coast, Acadia National Park was originally preserved in 1919 by the efforts of Maine residents and summer visitors, who recognized the need to protect the spectacular landscape. The park embodies many of Maine's scenic wonders, with rugged mountains, historic carriage roads, a rocky coastline, offshore islands, and dense forests.
